Isn’t this parenting gig a funny thing? When you have a newborn, and you don’t remember when was the last time you had more than two hours of uninterrupted sleep, you wish your baby would be at least a toddler. Then, once you have a toddler, that constantly on the move toddler, who would rather (no kidding) bang her head against the floor than sit still for more than 30 seconds, you finally understand why these mums with older kids were telling you to enjoy the newborn stage of baby’s life. And then you hear people talking about the terrible twos and how having a threenager is even worse than the terrible twos. And you start to wonder how on earth you are going to get through all of these stages. So here it goes, baby vs toddler. Which years are actually the worst? Ok, I can’t really talk about the terrible twos or the…
My recent almost a month-long holiday to Slovakia went rather quickly. So, it’s back to the UK now. I could say that after twelve years of living here, it’s like my second home now, but there are still and always will be many things I miss about my home country. And I’m not talking about family and friends. That’s obvious. As is the food or the stunning nature you can experience in Slovakia. I have previously written a post about the things I love about my home, which you can read here. But today I’m talking about some less common, less obvious, somewhat unexpected and weird stuff that I really miss from home sometimes. What are they? Stay tuned to find out. My parents’ home village They both come from the same village, called Osturňa, where people still live in the original village development. Consisting of wooden houses (farmyards), with the…
I love personalised presents. I like to look for something unique and different when buying Christmas presents for my family. Or any presents for that matter. So with my best friend welcoming their new bundle of joy this year, I knew all along that I would give them something personalised. Choosing the perfect gift for new parents is not an easy task. There are some traditional gifts such as baby clothing, toys, booties, blankets and towels. Nothing wrong with that, in fact, they can come in handy. Although I definitely wouldn’t go overboard with buying newborn size clothing. Firstly, you just don’t know how big or small the baby is going to be. Secondly, the new parents are likely going to buy enough newborn clothing themselves. And last, they are probably going to get some from others anyway. Definitely not a WOW factor. So, if you want to get some clothes, get…

Halloween or All Saints Day? With the end of October fast approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to share with you what exactly the upcoming festivities mean to me. 31st of October is traditionally tied to Halloween in the UK, but in my country it’s the following All Saints Day that is still of major importance. Growing up in Slovakia, Halloween used to be a bit foreign to me. All Saints Day or All Soul’s Day was all I knew. The first time I learned a bit more about Halloween was probably when I was getting ready for my A levels from English language. British and American holidays and traditions was one of the topics we had to learn about. There was no trick or treating during my childhood, no pumpkin carving, no scary decorations or dressing up during this time of the year. It was all about…
It’s my daughter’s fourth visit to my home country Slovakia in her short sixteen months of life. And each time we visit, everything is new to her. The people, the surroundings. Of course, at her young age, she doesn’t remember she’s been here only a few months earlier. Everytime we come, it takes her a little while to adapt completely to her new environment and all the ‘new’ people around. But luckily, she adapts quiet well and loves to be around others. Before long she is only too happy to be the centre of the attention. Having a family in a different country is not easy. But I have to say that before I had my baby, things were a lot simpler. Easier to handle in a way. This changed with the arrival of our baby. Now there is one set of grandparents in Slovakia, another grandma in Albania. Her…
